Animal Care
We care about our animals
Here at the farm we pride ourselves with the level of care we provide for our animals, we try to give them the best life possible as well as allowing the public to enjoy them too. There are many ways we can show how we do this.

The Red Tractor Licence
You may have seen this logo only on foods produced in the UK, the red tractor scheme is a food assurance scheme so customers know the food has been produced safely and responsibly from all stages farm through to shop. This is includes animal welfare, food safety and environmental protection with the standards made by experts, scientists, vets, and the government to ensure food is sourced from crops and animals that have been well cared for.
We follow the standards of the red tractor licence for all animals on the farm although the animals are not necessarily going into the food chain.

Hiring of Horses Licence
Each donkey that is going to potentially be used on the donkey rides at our farm has to be licenced by the local authority after inspection by a registered vet yearly. They assess the capability of the donkey as well as their care and management. This ensures that the donkey’s welfare is maintained and they can be ridden without causing distress, suffering or injury.

Zoo License
Anyone wanting to display wild animals to the public must have a zoo licence from the council. In order to get a zoo licence, animal care standards and housing are assessed as well as the establishment helping educate the public on biodiversity and conservation, as well as possibly doing conservation research or breeding to help repopulate species to the wild.

Show Cows
There are various shows which some of our cows attend through the year allowing us to compete with other farms across the country on the quality and production from our cows. Our herd is named Carldanton Holsteins and we have done really well gaining many placings when competing in dairy expos as well as agricultural shows. This success proves we have a high quality of cows in our herd and that they are well cared for and if you want to follow the progress of the herd you can follow Carldanton Holsteins on facebook.

Rare Breeds Conservation
Here at the farm we are trying to help with the conservation of some rare breeds. This is by allowing our customers to see and learn about them as well as breeding some to increase numbers. Some of the rare breeds we have on the farm are: Cameroon sheep, North Ronaldsay sheep, Torwen Badger face welsh mountain sheep, Old English Goats, Silver Appleyard ducks, Cayuga ducks, Aylesbury ducks, Highland ponies, Dales ponies, New forest ponies, Hackney ponies, Exmoor ponies, Dartmoor ponies, Eriskay ponies.
