Kune Kune Pigs

A male is known as a BOAR, a female is known as a SOW and a baby is known as a PIGLET. A group is known as a DROVE. The Kune Kune pig, originally kept by the Maoris in New Zealand, are friendly hairy pigs born in a variety of colours. It is a firm favourite among pet owners, due to its placid friendly nature and love of human company. Small scale pig breeders enjoy its ease of management and its ability to thrive on grass. An interesting feature is they have a pair of tassels under their chin called Piri Piri.

May live 10 to 15 years.

Weight:

They weigh around 200 pounds.

Size:

Can grow 24 to 30 inches tall.

Diet:

They are grazers rather than foragers. They eat fruit and vegetables.

Gestation:

3 months 3 weeks and 3 days. Litters from 2 to 16 piglets.

Kune Kune pigs are often called 'mini pigs' or 'tea cup pigs' as he piglets are tiny and cute. However, much to contrary belief they do grow quite big and do not make good house pets

Ever hear of the phrase “sweat like a pig”? Well, pigs do not actually have sweat glands. Pigs cannot sweat! This means they need plenty of fresh water available at all times to prevent overheating. Pigs’ skin lacks hair, so they are very sensitive to the sun. In the wild they wallow in the mud to stay cool and protect their skin. Each piglet returns to the same teat each time to suckle from its mum, this is how a “RUNT” is made. Each teat produces different amounts of milk.
